The Best AI Tools for Performance Marketers: What I Actually Use at Each Stage
Not a list of 50 tools. The AI stack I actually use to research, create, launch, track and report on ads, organised by the job each tool does, with what it costs and what to skip.

The Short Answer
You do not need 50 AI tools. You need one or two for each job in the ad workflow. The stack I actually use: Meta Ad Library, Google Trends and vidIQ for research; Claude and ChatGPT for copy; Gemini (Nano Banana) and ChatGPT for images; Canva and Instagram Edits to finish creatives; Meta Advantage+ and Google Performance Max to launch; n8n and the Conversions API to track; and Claude connected to my ad accounts to analyse.
Two things matter more than any individual tool. First, the most powerful AI in your stack is already inside Meta and Google, included with your ad spend. Second, AI is only as good as the data and creative you feed it.
1. Why Most "AI Tools" Lists Do Not Help You
Most lists rank tools by features or hype, so you finish reading with 30 new tabs open and no idea what to actually use on Monday. A performance marketer does five jobs: research, create, launch, track and analyse. The right question is not "what is the best AI tool?" but "what is the best tool for this job?"
So this guide is organised by job. For each stage I list only tools I use myself, what I use them for, and what they cost. If a free option does the job, I say so.
2. The AI Stack Across the Ad Workflow
Here is the whole workflow at a glance. Tap each stage to see the tools and a real example of how they work together.
The AI Stack Across the Ad Workflow
Which Tool Does Which Job, Stage by StageResearch
Core Objective
Before you write a single ad, find out what is already working and what people are searching for. This stage needs almost no paid AI: the best research tools are free, and AI is mainly useful for summarising what you collect.
Key Action Items
Simple Example
You open the Meta Ad Library, find ten competitor ads that have been running for months (a sign they work), then ask Claude to summarise the hooks and offers they have in common.
3. Stage by Stage: The Tools and How I Use Them
Research. The Meta Ad Library shows every ad any brand is running, free. Ads that have been live for months are usually working, so they are the best research you can get. Google Trends tells you whether interest in a topic or product is growing, and vidIQ shows what people search for on YouTube. AI comes in afterwards: I paste what I collected into Claude and ask it to find the patterns.
Create. This is where AI saves the most time. Claude is my main writing partner for briefs, hooks and ad copy, and ChatGPT is a useful second opinion for variations. For images I use Gemini's image model (Nano Banana) and ChatGPT's image generation. Canva turns those into finished, correctly sized ads, and Instagram Edits, Meta's free video editor, cuts the Reels. For AI video clips I use Google Flow, and Adobe Enhance cleans up voiceover audio. More on how these fit together in my AI workflow.
Launch and optimise. Meta Advantage+ and Google Performance Max use each platform's own AI to choose who sees your ads and how much to bid. They are included with your ad spend and see far more data than any outside tool. Since the Andromeda update, your main lever on Meta is creative, not targeting settings.
Track and automate. n8n captures and routes every lead and sale, and sends conversions back to Meta through the Conversions API. It is the least exciting part of the stack and the part that most improves results. Start with what n8n is.
Analyse and report. Claude connected to Meta Ads, Google Ads, Google Analytics and Search Console turns an afternoon of exports into a few minutes of questions. The full setup and guardrails are in how I run Meta and Google ads with Claude. For building landing pages, Claude Code does the heavy lifting.
4. My Actual Stack, Layer by Layer
The same tools, drawn as the layers they sit in. Notice how much of the value sits in the free platform AI and in the plumbing (automation and data), not in the flashy creative tools.
5. Every Tool: Job, Cost and Verdict
Costs change often, so treat these as a guide. Where I could verify a price on the tool's own site or a current review in September 2026, I have listed it. "Free + paid plans" means there is a useful free tier and paid upgrades.
| Tool | Job | Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Ad Library | Competitor ad research | Free | Start every campaign here. |
| Google Trends | Demand checks | Free | A two-minute sanity check on any idea. |
| vidIQ | YouTube search demand | Free + paid plans | Worth it if YouTube is part of your funnel. |
| Claude | Copy, briefs, analysis, landing pages | Free + paid plans | My main AI. The paid plan pays for itself quickly. |
| ChatGPT | Variations, images | Free + paid plans | A strong second opinion and image generator. |
| Gemini (Nano Banana) | Ad images and edits | Free + paid plans | Fast, good at editing an existing image. |
| Canva | Finished static ads, resizing | Free + paid plans | Turns AI images into ready-to-run ads. |
| Instagram Edits | Reels editing | Free, no watermark (mobile only) | Built for Reels by Meta itself. Easy default. |
| Google Flow | AI video clips | Free daily credits; paid Google AI plans from $4.99/month | Good for B-roll and concept videos. |
| Adobe Enhance | Voiceover audio clean-up | Free up to 1 hour/day; Premium $9.99/month | Makes phone audio sound studio-quality. |
| Meta Advantage+ | Targeting, bidding, delivery | Included with ad spend | Use by default. Feed it great creative. |
| Google Performance Max | Google-wide automation | Included with ad spend | Powerful with clean conversion data. |
| n8n | Automation, lead routing, tracking | Free self-hosted; cloud from €20/month | The best-value tool on this list. |
| Claude + MCP connectors | Reporting and audits across accounts | Claude plan; official connectors are free | Replaces hours of weekly reporting. |
| Claude Code | Landing pages, site changes | Paid Claude plan | Build and test landing pages yourself. |
6. How to Choose an AI Tool (Before You Pay)
New AI tools launch every week. Before adding one to your stack, run it through these five tests. Tap each one for an example.
How to Choose an AI Tool
Five Tests Before You Pay for AnythingDoes It Save Hours Every Week?
Core Objective
A good tool removes a task you do every week, not one you do twice a year. If you cannot name the specific weekly task it replaces and roughly how long that task takes today, you are buying a toy, not a tool.
Key Action Items
Simple Example
For example, Claude connected to your ad accounts can replace a three-hour weekly report. That is 150 hours a year. A tool that makes one fancy image a month does not come close.
7. What to Skip: A Hype Check
Some categories of AI tools promise a lot and rarely deliver for performance marketers:
- One-click "AI ad generators". They produce the same generic hooks for everyone. Your best ads come from your own research and your own customer's words, shaped with a general AI like Claude.
- Paid "AI targeting" add-ons. Meta's Advantage+ and Google's Performance Max already do this inside the platform, with far more data. Paying for an outside layer usually means paying twice.
- Tools that promise to replace your media buyer. AI can collect data, spot problems and propose changes. Deciding what to test and what the brand should say is still a human job.
- Giant bundles of 50+ tools. You will use three of them. Pick one tool per job and learn it properly.
- Anything that wants full admin access to client accounts on day one. Start read-only, with official connectors, and grant more only when you trust it.
