The Short Answer
Yes, a fresher can get a performance marketing job in India. But you will almost never start with the title "Performance Marketing Manager". Freshers get in through roles like Digital Marketing Executive, Paid Media Executive, Growth Intern or an agency trainee position, and then grow into performance roles.
What gets a fresher hired is not a degree or a certificate. It is proof: a few small campaigns you actually ran, with honest numbers, that show you can be trusted with real money. With focused practice, most freshers can build that proof in 3 to 6 months.
1. The Doubts I Hear Every Week
I hire marketers, and I get messages from freshers every week. Almost all of them carry the same worries. This guide answers each one honestly:
- "No company will trust a fresher with an ad budget." Partly true, and there is a way around it.
- "Every job post asks for 1 to 2 years of experience." Many of those posts quietly hire freshers who show proof.
- "I am not from a marketing background." It matters far less than you think.
- "I need to spend my own money on ads first." A little, but much less than you fear.
- "AI is going to take the entry-level jobs." It is changing them, not removing them.
- "Courses promise placements. Is this a trap?" Some are. Here is how to tell.
2. Do Companies Actually Hire Freshers for Paid Ads?
Here is the honest view from the hiring side. Performance marketing means spending real money every day. A mistake in a campaign can waste a client's budget in hours, so companies are naturally cautious about handing that to someone with no track record.
But companies still need juniors. Someone has to set up campaigns, upload creatives, check tracking, pull reports and spot what is not working. That work is where almost every performance marketer starts.
When I look at a fresher, three things turn a "no" into a "yes". A fresher who shows all three is not really competing as a fresher any more. You are up against people with a year of experience and nothing to show for it, and you often win. Tap each one:

Core Objective
Even a ₹100-a-day campaign for your own page or a friend's shop shows you understand how ads behave when real money is on the line. It is the difference between "I studied this" and "I have done this".

3. The Job Titles Freshers Actually Get
Many fresher performance roles are not called "performance marketing". Search for these titles too, and read the job description, not just the title. Tap each one to see what you actually do and who usually hires.
Tip: when a job post asks for "1 to 2 years of experience", apply anyway if you have real campaigns to show. Experience requirements are often a wish list, not a hard rule, and proof is what makes them flexible.

Core Objective
A mix of ads, social media and reporting. In many companies this is where paid ads work starts for a fresher, even though the title does not say "performance".
Key Action Items
Simple Example
Usually hired by: agencies and small to mid-size brands.
4. Where Freshers Get Hired
There are four realistic routes into a first performance marketing job. Tap each one to see what you learn there, what it pays and who it suits.
Where Freshers Get Hired
Four Real Routes Into a First Performance Marketing JobAgency
Core Objective
Agencies run ads for many clients at once, so they always need people to set up campaigns, build reports and keep accounts tidy. They are used to training juniors, which makes them the most common door in for freshers.
Key Action Items
Simple Example
Best for: freshers who want to see lots of accounts quickly and do not mind a demanding first year.
5. "I Am Not From a Marketing Background"
This is the doubt I hear most, and it matters the least. Performance marketing is one of the few fields where nobody checks your degree once you can show results.
BCom, BBA or commerce: you already understand money, margins and numbers, which is half the job.
BTech or a science degree: your comfort with data and tools is a real advantage, especially for tracking and automation.
BA or arts: writing and understanding people is a big part of ad creative and copy. Pair it with basic numbers and you are well placed.
12th pass or still in college: possible, especially through freelancing and internships. Proof matters even more for you, so start building it early.
Career switchers in your late 20s or 30s: your experience in another industry can be an asset. Brands in that industry value someone who already understands their customers.
Smaller cities and English: many fresher roles are now remote or hybrid, so your city matters less every year. You need clear, simple English to write reports and talk to a team. You do not need perfect English.
6. Do You Need Your Own Money or Certificates?
Money: you do need a small practice budget to learn how ads behave with real money, but it is far less than people fear. ₹100 to ₹500 a day for a short test is enough to learn from. Even better, offer to run ads for a friend's or family member's business using their budget. My guide on how to practice performance marketing without a job or big budget shows exactly how.
Certificates: the free Google Ads and Meta certifications are worth doing because they teach you the platforms, but on their own they rarely get anyone hired. Every applicant has them. What a hiring manager wants to see is what you did after the certificate. That is why a small performance marketing portfolio, even without clients, beats a page of certificates.
7. Will AI Take Entry-Level Ad Jobs?
Honest answer: AI is taking over the button-pushing part of the job. Ad platforms now decide much of the targeting and bidding on their own, and AI can write ad variations in seconds.
But that does not remove the junior role. It changes it. Companies now need juniors who can check that tracking is correct, test creatives properly, read the numbers and tell the senior marketer what is actually working. Those are judgment tasks, and AI makes a fresher who can do them faster and more valuable.
So a fresher who knows how to use AI well for research, analysis and creative testing is more hireable in 2026, not less. This is what AI-first marketing means in practice, and it is one of the quickest ways to stand out from other freshers.
8. What Freshers Actually Earn
Fresher pay depends far more on what you can prove than on your degree. These ranges match my full guide to performance marketing salaries in India.
| Fresher profile | Typical pay |
|---|---|
| Fresher with no proof yet | ₹2.5–4 LPA (₹15–30k per month) |
| Fresher with a portfolio and AI skills | ₹5–8 LPA (₹40–70k per month) |
| Paid internship | A monthly stipend, usually well below a full salary |
9. Red Flags Freshers Should Avoid
Freshers are an easy target, so watch out for these:
- "100% job guarantee" courses. No course can guarantee a job. Ask to speak to real past students and check where they actually work.
- Paying to do an internship. A real internship pays you, even if only a little. If you are asked to pay to "join", walk away.
- Unpaid internships with no end date. A short unpaid trial can be fair. Months of free work on live client accounts is not.
- Fake experience letters. Some people buy or fake them. They come out in the first technical interview, and they can follow you around.
- Made-up results in your portfolio. Interviewers ask follow-up questions on every number. Small, honest results always beat big fake ones.
10. The Proof That Gets a Fresher Hired
Here is the path I would follow as a fresher today. Each step builds the proof that the next one needs, and most people can get through it in 3 to 6 months of focused work.
Once you reach the application stage, my playbook on how to land a performance marketing job covers the CV, LinkedIn and negotiation in detail, and these performance marketing interview questions will prepare you for the interview and practical test. If you are starting from zero, my 30-day learning plan covers the first step.
11. What to Do This Week
Do not wait until you feel ready. If you have been watching courses for months without doing any of this, read can you get a job just by watching courses? first. Then start here:
- Pick one platform. Meta Ads is the easiest place to start for most freshers.
- Find one real business. A friend's shop, a family business or your own small page.
- Run one small campaign. Keep the budget tiny and write down everything you change.
- Write it up. The goal, what you did, the numbers and what you learned, in one page.
- Search the right titles. Apply to five fresher roles from the table above, and attach your one-page write-up.
